2 New Paintings Finished! December 2012

Hey There Everyone,

I hope your December has been treating you well!  I wanted to share 2 paintings that I recently finished.  One, will look familiar. The painting, "Self Portrait, Rainy Night 2," was a commissioned piece. I already painted "Self Portrait, Rainy Night" in 2009.  Someone wanted to buy the original painting.  I let her know that that particular painting was already TAKEN by my parents and that they wouldn't want to SELL it.  Her answer, was "Paint another one, and I'll buy that one from you." So, I did & she bought it!

"Self Portrait, Rainy Night 2," Oil on Canvas, 24"x18"

The other painting is titled, "Pretty Light." I painted this smaller 12"x 9"piece in about 3 hours.  More of a study.  I love painting children and I wanted to add another painting to my portfolio.

I HOPE you LIKE my NEW Paintings! Please leave a comment!

New Artwork December 2012!~

Hey everybody,

I have been working on some new paintings (both pastel and oil.)  I am very pleased to share 2 of my finished pieces.  One, is a pastel painting at 12.5" X 5." I know, kind of a wEird size, but it really works for the composition.

Figuring out titles are always difficult, so I was excited about this particular pastel painting.  The title came so easily.  I've decided on "Walk in the Park."  I felt that title was perfect.
"Walk in the Park," Pastel on Paper, 12.5" x 5"

The oil painting is more of what I would call "FAN ART."  Any of you who like Pixar, will understand when I'm saying "Fan Art."  Thanks to my wonderful models Cristen Miller and her beautiful daughter Josephine.  I had fun with this painting and changed a lot from the photo reference.  I changed the hair on both mom and child, the outfits, the stuffed animal, and the background as well.  I hope you like it!  I am still looking for a good title for this painting.  If you have any ideas, please feel free to LEAVE A COMMENT!!

NEEDS A TITLE!  PLEASE HELP! LEAVE A COMMENT!

Thanks for your time! I hope December is treating all of you well!

3 Paintings got into an Online Show!

Hi everybody,

Southern California Plein Air Painters Association has an "On Location" 2012 Online Exhibition!
I am honored to say that 3 of my paintings got into this show!  Which 3 paintings?
  1. "Lake Malibu," Oil 12"x12" $450.00
  2. "Plein Air Painting," Oil 12"x9" $400.00
  3. "Bermuda," Oil 9"x12" $400.00
This show is extremely cool.  To qualify, one had to paint the painting "plein air" aka on-sight, from the beginning of the painting to the finish of each painting.  Nothing "in-studio," so that's pretty fun.

What else is really neat about this show is that 100% of the sales of each painting in this show goes to solely to the ARTIST!!! All through PayPal.  How AWESOME is THAT!?!

So, please check out my work and all the other artists' work!  If you want to buy any of the paintings, you will know that 100% of the sales will go to the artist who made that painting!

Please check out the sight with the link below, there is a lot of great art in the show!

"Malibu Lake," Oil 12"x12"

"Yoshi Lying" got into an online art COMPETITION!

"Yoshi Lying," 12"x16" oil on canvas
Hey everyone,
I'm excited to announce that "Yoshi Lying," was accepted into the Richeson75Online art competition: Animals, Birds, & Wildlife.  I'm very honored and excited to be a part of this show. Now, it's not for sale, because it's been sold a while ago.  But, I might be able to win an award.  I may not win an award.   But, I feel like I've won (I know, cliche).  Not many art pieces get accepted into the show, only 75.  That may seem like a lot, yet, consider how many people can enter into an online competition.  Thanks Richeson75 for seeing something in my work!

The online exhibit officially opens on November 15th!  The winners will be announced on December 15th!  I'll keep all of you posted!

Have a Great OCTOBER!

Student Work Summer 2012!

Hi there Everyone!

I am extremely proud of a recent class of mine.  I taught Beginning Drawing this Summer Semester at Conejo Valley Adult School in Thousand Oaks, California.  I taught the very basics.  I started with charcoal drawing and finished with pastel drawing.

All my students are complete novices at drawing and art!  To all my fellow artists out there, my students had no idea how to even "sight measure."  To all my non-artists, "sight measuring" is one of the first things you should learn when you draw.  You learn how to draw things accurately, in good proportion and perspective.  When first learning how to "sight measure" it can be difficult.

In the beginning of my class, it was very difficult for my students to draw accurately the subject matter they had in front of them.  By the end of the class, I saw a huge improvement!  This is why TEACHING is AWESOME!  I'm actually making a difference!  I LOVE WATCHING MY STUDENTS GROW!

The age range of my students is from mid 20's to mid 60's.

Below are some great samples of my novice students' work.  ENJOY!
CONGRATS TO MY STUDENTS!  I AM VERY PROUD!!

Importance of Demos While Teaching

Hey There,
Sorry for the delay, I was on a lovely vacation in LAKE TAHOE, CA.  I plan on painting a series from that trip soon.  I was so inspired, the landscape was absolutely beautiful.

Today, I'm not going to discuss Tahoe.  Today, I'm going to explain the importance of doing demos (i.e. demonstrations) for your class. When I was an art student, I would "eat up" any demo my professors would paint/draw for me.  When you are learning to create art, watching a professional do a demonstration for you is amazing.  It is so helpful on how you should start your own work.

One thing I've noticed as a student is that after watching a demo you say, "oh, that's easy," you try to do it and it doesn't turn out quite as nice.  Although this always seems to happen, the DEMO give the STUDENT that extra bit of CONFIDENCE they need in order to START their DRAWING or PAINTING.

So, now that I'm a Teacher, I am constantly doing demos for my Students.

Below, are some demos that I've done for my Plein Air Painting & Beginning Drawing Class. ENJOY!

Collaboration with barkworks!!

Hey there everyone!

I have just joined a business venture with barkworks (pups & stuff) in the Oaks Shopping Center in Thousand Oaks, CA!  Barkworks is one of those stores where they sell pet supplies and really cute baby pets, usually baby PUPPIES!!! They are all very cute there.  I have my painting, "French Bulldog," up in the store.  The painting is for sale!  But, the most important thing is that there are my business cards, my postcards, and my flyers in the store!  Before I had a chance to leave the store, they were already handing my information out to their customers!  Whatever business I get from them I will give a percentage to the store!  Help me get those commissions!

KEEP POSTED because next month I am going into LIMITED EDITION GICLEE PRINTS of my PAINTINGS!  So, if you like one of my paintings, but don't have the wall space or the deep pockets to afford an original, this is for YOU!!!!!  Please leave me comments on which paintings you'd be interested in owning a print of.  The more input I get, the better!!

I HOPE EVERYONE IS HAVING A LOVELY JULY THUS FAR!!! TALK TO YOU ALL SOON!!!!!

2012 National Juried Exhibition

Hi Everybody,

"Daddy's Little Artists,"  Oil on Canvas,  14"x18"
I have some cool news!  I enter my artwork in many juried competitions.  I never expect that my work will get in.  Art is so subjective.  For instance, I entered "Rainy Night 2," into the Annual Spring Show at the Academy of Art University last year and didn't get into the show. The beginning of this year, I entered the same piece into a highly more competitive show, not only did the piece get into the show, but it also won an award of merit.  So, as you can see when I enter something into a competition it's never guaranteed that it will be accepted.

Well, "enough beating around the bush," so to say.  The Great Frame Up Gallery in Longmont, Colorado is having a juried art competition: the 2012 National Juried Art Exhibition. The show is juried by Nicholaus Arnold.  Mr. Arnold has received his MFA from Syracuse University and a BFA from Wright State University.

I got not one, not two, not three, but FOUR PAINTINGS ACCEPTED into the EXHIBITION!!!
I am so very honored and appreciative to be a part of this exhibit!

"Our Time,"  Oil on Canvas,  24"x24"
"Mommy & Me,"  Oil on Canvas,  20"x16"

"I Treasure You,"  Oil on Linen,  24"x18"
Here's information about the show below:

Why I love painting children!

Hi Everybody!

So....children.... Children are not easy to paint, let me tell you.  I first painted a child for a commissioned portrait.  Honestly, I was a little scared at first.  Any artist will tell you when painting kids that you walk on a thin line.  This line waivers from painting a sweet looking child or the exact opposite and the kid will look creepy or a stunted adult.  It's very easy to go into way too much detail and you can loose the innocence and youth of the child. Below is my first commissioned portrait of a young 5 year old girl, Hannah.

"Hannah Gardner," Oil on Canvas 8"x10"
After I painted Hannah, I realized that I was able to accomplish the cute innocence of a child, no creepiness at all!  When this occurred, I realized that I didn't have to be afraid to paint children anymore.  I became extremely interested in Mary Cassatt, a great Impressionist Artist.  She lived during the same time as such artists' like Monet and Degas.  Cassatt was able to be successful during her lifetime in a "boys club."  This is what drew me towards children with their parents.  The relationship of a child's love towards their mother or father is a beautiful thing.  This relationship will help unfold the child's development and growth.

With this, I never looked back and have made painting children one of my prominent subject matters!

New Series I'm working on! May 2012!

Hi Everyone!

Well it's been extremely eventful for me lately. My sister graduated from California Lutheran University on May 12th with a Business Marketing major. Maybe she'll be able to help promote me ;)  Also, Mother's day is always a big event with my family.  It's been an enjoyable, lovely month.  I'm blessed to have a family that is so supportive of me and my work.  For instance, my Uncle & Grandpa work together and they gave me one of their offices to use as my studio.  It is so kind of them, they just wanted to help in any way that they can.  My parents are absolutely selfless and wonderful!  They never try to pressure me into doing anything but I want to do, plus so much more!  So I am thankful for them!

Enough with my thankful rant, back to art!  I am currently working on a new series of paintings for a gallery.  The gallery owner loved my painting "Rainy Night 1," and told me to do a series of 4 paintings of people walking in the rain and they will represent me!  I'll share the gallery name once I actually have my paintings finished and mailed out to them!  Until then, let me show you my current series of paintings that I'm working on!

As you can see below, none of the paintings are finished, I'm just happy with the progress that I've made thus far.  Please feel free to leave any comments and let me know what you think of my work!  I appreciate all the feedback that I can get!

I promise that I'll post sooner next time!  I need to get used to blogging :)
